Hidden Faces

One Eye
Seth Godin talks about ssahn.com, a korean blog. It seems like the people in the pictures are saying hello to other “One-Eye-ers” and I was struck by the sheer diversity of the images as well as of the people captured in those images.

The Office

I haven’t been living in a cave the last couple of years but I finally got see the 1st season of BBC’s The Office on DVD. And it is BRILLIANT!! I never realised that awkward pauses could be used to such hilarious effect. Rick Gervais’ David Brent is an absolute riot as the smarmy/clueless/loathesome boss who tries to enliven up his employees’ days with cringe-worthy jokes/corny antics.

I just love the scenes where Brent attempts to show that he’s sensitive to racial/gender/whatever issues with his droning monologues and ends up putting his foot in his mouth. MacKenzie Crook’s Gareth Keenan also gives an entirely believeable turn as the colleague you’ll love to hate. His anal-retentive and self-important behaviour reminds me that there’s always an oversupply of people like that in places I work in.

I’ll definitely be getting the second season but it almost seems a crying shame that the series ends at that. Comedy doesn’t get any funnier than this.

Bring on the pain

Seth Godin has a post about reaching your ‘Big Max’ after you’re reached a personal peak. I think the biggest problem with getting to the Big Max is the sharp decline that comes right before you hit the jackpot. And that terrifies people, myself included.

My personal fear is what if I don’t get past point C? Then what?

Mmm….brains….yum!

A List Apart has a great article on Corporate Prose. Paragraphs full of such juicy buzzwords like “Enterprise Intelligence” or “Strategic Competencies” or “Innovative Employer - Employee Synergistic Partnership for Added Client Value” seem to be epidemic on the internet. Erin Kissane lets on some tips on coming face to face with these brain sucking monstrosities and surviving to live another day.

To be totally honest, I had a period where I was, how do you put it, craving some brain shake myself. Like every other web design agency (and I use the words, design & agency in the most loose sense possible), my agency wasn’t just me by myself. O’ no, I had a collektiv of designers and developers to draw from. Along with a faux artistic sensibility that could only be borne out of 3 months with Photoshop and eyeballing iDN.

And I used ‘Open’ & ‘Collaboration’ in the same sentence. Oh, the horror!

Eventually, I came to my senses and gradually decreased my brain intake. Today, I’m fully de-zombified and fighting the good fight against the living dead copy.
